10 Steps for A Blissful Morning Even When You're Not a Morning Person

10 Steps for a Blissful Morning

Do you consider yourself a morning person? I have always been a morning person, but I haven’t always maximized my mornings. I don’t know how many times I’ve hit the snooze button, or how many times I looked at my watch to see that it’s noontime and I have no idea where my morning went. Then I started doing my research and I’ve realized both from what I read, what I listened to and from my own experience that a morning routine can set the stage for what the rest of my day will be like.

And as a mom, it’s so easy to get sucked in what needs to be done at the moment that we don’t even get the chance to be intentional about what we want to do. We end up going through the motions, one chore after another, that at the end of the day, we feel tired and unfulfilled.

I put together this list of 10 steps that I’ve found to help ground me, so that no matter what else happens throughout the day, I know I’ve taken a moment for myself to reflect, grow and energize myself. These things shouldn't stop when we become moms. All the more do we need to reflect on lessons, continue to grow as individuals and to be filled with energy because our kids need us to be full of wisdom and to keep up with their energy.

With this, I’m happy to share the 10 steps I take to start my day blissfully:

1. Affirmations

You are enough

Applying the self-fulfilling prophecy here, I hope to become my best self this way. I visualize my ideal self and show up as that person first thing.

Here’s an example that you can try:

I am strong, I am energized, and I am happy. I am enough and I’m everything my family needs.

2. Prayer + Meditation

There’s nothing like morning prayers to condition the mind and soul. Aside from my spontaneous prayer, I read a love language reflection/day on marriage and a protection prayer for my children.

This harder than I thought! I used to think that I can’t meditate in the morning, I’ll just get sleepier. I also used to think it’s ridiculous, and I don’t need it if I pray. However, when I gave it a chance and got over my negative apprehensions, I started to feel the difference in how it calms and centers me throughout my day. It takes a lot of focus not to get lost in my thoughts of all the things I need to do, but it’s taught me to remain present. Being present is a skill that has diminished significantly because of how we’ve been conditioned to do everything while fiddling with our phones. Here's a quick overview on how to meditate

3. Learn Something New

Whether it's learning a new language or reading the book, I make sure to make time to nourish my mind with new information that stretches me out of my comfort zone. I find it really helpful and fulfilling to absorb new things in the morning. It gives me the opportunity to apply what I've learned throughout the day as well.

4. Hydration + Supplements

The benefits of water have long been established. But I haven’t always been consistent in drinking enough water. To think this simple act can help prevent a lot of common ailments like headaches, UTI, colds, etc.

I level up my first drink of water for the day with non-acidic Vitamin C (aka sodium ascorbate) + malunggay (moringa) supplements + calcium + omega 3 fish oil.

5. Bathroom Routine

Shower

My morning bathroom routine has evolved over time but the one thing I would tell my younger self is to use sunscreen every day! I wish I knew this when I was younger! Nevertheless, I’ve made it a daily practice even when it’s cloudy, even when I’m not going to the beach. My motivation is to avoid dark spots in the future.

6. Exercise

Exercise
Okay, this has always been my biggest struggle. I know in my head that exercise is good, it’s not for vanity but for health. However, despite knowing this, and even despite actively working on my cholesterol issues (I’ve had this since I was in my 20s!), I still have a hard time committing to exercise.

Then I realized that I need to exercise so that I can have energy. And that’s actually what I really lack. I’m always tired at the end of the day that I feel like I come home from work and I don’t have the energy to play with my kids. All I want to do is shower and sleep.

I used to set really big goals for myself like going to the gym or practicing yoga every day (from no exercise at all), then I would just get lazy and disappointed with myself and start this unhealthy cycle that would lead to me giving up.

So instead, I’ve committed to beating the week, that is going for at least 30 minutes of movement, 4 days out of the week. I know it’s not enough since I should get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, but it’s definitely better than nothing and once I feel stronger, I plan to level up.

I've found this gentle postnatal exercise program to be quite effective because I feel like it's made for moms like me who are still recovering from giving birth. I can go at my own pace and modify the exercises accordingly.

7. Breakfast

Oatmeal

I’m hungry all the time so I can’t skip breakfast. I usually have oatmeal with chia and flax. These help manage cholesterol levels and support milk production. (Anyone else with cholesterol issues?)

I also take my lactation tea. To all lactating moms, what’s your favorite lactation drink?

8. Journaling / Goal Setting

I list 3 things I’m grateful for, 3 lessons I’ve learned, 3 pre-emptive things I’m grateful for. I also schedule my top 3 major tasks plus any minor tasks for the day.

I do this even on weekends. It helps me go through my day with intention and living my day with intention spells the difference between just existing and feeling fulfilled. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, work-from-home mom, working mom, etc., it still matters to think about these things if we want to continue to grow.

9. Hug and kiss my kids

I can’t leave the house without this brief moment and it’s my favorite part of waking up. A 20-second hug does wonders for happiness and connection.

10. Pump / Breastfeed

Breastpump
Pumping / breastfeeding before I dive into work helps me start the day focused and light. It’s not easy to make time to pump breastmilk for my baby, but I choose to do it because aside from the health benefits it gives her, it makes me feel happy knowing that even if I’m away from her for hours during the day, I’m doing it for her and there’s always fulfillment and joy in that.

I’ve been doing these 10 steps for some time now and it takes commitment to wake up around 45 minutes earlier than before to make these happen. I find it worth it because my days become far more meaningful.

How do you spend your mornings? Is there anything here that you want to try? What new habits are you working on? Do you have any tried and tested habits that you think we should try?
